Great Sandy Desert

Bare red sand absorbs the heat and becomes a hostile environment to all vegetation, except a scattering of spinifex and hardy plants. Long stretches of flat ground are interrupted by sand ridges that have been formed by erosion over thousands of years. Most of the Great Sandy Desert is not bare sand. Instead, the land is covered with numerous plants that flower in brilliant colours in August - September after rain.
